Brunei’s Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah launched the 2014 Knowledge Convention (Majlis Ilmu 2014) with the theme of “Science and Technology The Catalyst for Development that Increases the Nation’s Quality of Life” last Tuesday.
The Sultan said he hoped that through the convention, participants will learn the importance of the role of science and technology in all aspects of their lives and benefit from the latest innovations in the fields of science and technology.
“By running several development plans in the country, we are always up to date with information on the development of science and technology. For instance, the information in the advancement of science and technology in the aspects of road construction, housing construction, bridge buidling, utilities construction, medical facilities, food and education. And we should benefit from the advancement of the science and technology, and not destroy the earth,” said the Sultan in the opening ceremony.
The knowledge Convention explored, discussed and showcased the field of science and technology in the Islamic ethical perspective and Shariah in science and technology, achievements of previous Islamic scientists, applying science and technology in development and enhancing the quality of life of the Ummah (nation) as well as the latest discoveries in science and innovations that were all presented in the seminar, forum, symposiums and exhibition.
The symposium collected the working papers by local and foreign experts, as each of them explored the aspects on the importance of Islamic values in the application of science and technology and roles of science and latest technology and innovation in enhancing the quality of life of the Ummah.
The Knowledge Convention 2014 exhibition (Majlis Ilmu 2014) showcased materials that are in line with the theme including national policies in environmental protection, provision on clean and safe drinking water, design and materials that are environmentally friendly, energy savings in buildings as well as informal learning through interactive exhibits (4D) for visitors, especially children and primary school students so as to develop and kindle their interest in science and mathematics.
The seminar also highlighted the importance of new innovations in the fields of science and technology to improve Brunei’s standing in the global Halal, Islamic Finance industries.
