In a significant move towards enhancing halal standardization and awareness, the Standards and Metrology Institute for Islamic Countries (SMIIC) joined forces with Turkey’s Independent Industrialists’ and Businessmen’s Association (MUSIAD) through the signing of two critical agreements. The ceremony, held at MUSIAD’s Istanbul headquarters, witnessed the participation of the organizations’ leaders, Abdurrahman Kaan and Ihsan Out, who committed to a collaborative effort aimed at bolstering the halal industry in the region.
These agreements set the groundwork for a series of joint initiatives designed to elevate awareness about halal practices and principles. Specifically, one agreement focuses on organizing events dedicated to promoting understanding and consciousness in the field of halal production and consumption. The other aims to establish a comprehensive monitoring and traceability system, enhancing the transparency and reliability of halal conformity assessment activities. This innovative system is expected to support firms in implementing halal standards throughout all phases of manufacturing products and delivering services, ensuring that goods meet the strict criteria required for halal certification.
Abdurrahman Kaan emphasized the significance of adhering to Islamic dietary laws, highlighting how clean eating and slaughtering practices prescribed in Islam are not only a matter of faith but also beneficial for human health. He expressed concern over the low awareness levels regarding halal production and consumption within the Islamic world and suggested that the current global health challenges, including the coronavirus outbreak, underline the importance of halal eating habits. There have been suggestions that the disease, which has had a profound impact globally, may have origins linked to wild animals, reinforcing the need for strict adherence to halal dietary laws.
Through this partnership, SMIIC and MUSIAD aim to address the existing gaps in knowledge and practice regarding halal standards, providing a platform for education, compliance, and innovation in the halal sector. This initiative not only seeks to enhance the quality and safety of products and services available to Muslim consumers but also aims to foster a deeper understanding of the holistic benefits of halal practices, contributing to the well-being of individuals and communities across the Islamic world. By doing so, it underscores the growing recognition of the critical role that halal standardization plays in the global economy and public health, marking a step forward in the pursuit of a more aware and conscientious Islamic market.
