TULSA, Okla. — Islamic Relief USA, a prominent nonprofit humanitarian organization, is set to visit Tulsa, Oklahoma, this weekend to contribute to the battle against food insecurity and inflation. The charity’s initiative is a part of the annual Islamic tradition known as Qurbani, an integral part of the Islamic faith which is held in high esteem around the globe.
The charity event, organized in association with the Khan Ohana Foundation, is scheduled for Saturday, July 15, from 9 a.m. to noon. The venue is 4823 South Sheridan Road, Suite 309, Tulsa, where the organization aims to distribute halal meat to the underserved.
This initiative comes on the heels of the Eid al-Adha festival, often referred to as the ‘Feast of Sacrifice’. This Islamic holiday, which pays homage to the virtue of sacrifice, traces its roots back to the story of the Prophet Abraham, who was prepared to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God. In a merciful intervention, God replaced Abraham’s son with a ram.
Eid al-Adha is traditionally celebrated by the Muslim community by sacrificing a sheep, goat, or cow, and distributing the meat in three equal parts: one for their own family, one for friends and relatives, and the third for the less fortunate.
“Qurbani serves a dual purpose. It’s not only a fulfillment of an Islamic tradition that pays tribute to Prophet Abraham’s devotion to God,” the organization explained in a press statement. “It also delivers a source of protein-rich nutrition to many who otherwise might have limited access to it throughout the year. This may be due to factors such as the high cost of meat or the need to prioritize spending on other essential items.”
Islamic Relief USA has a robust track record in this area. As a testament to their ongoing commitment to alleviating hunger, the organization distributed approximately 82,000 pounds of meat across the nation in 2023.
