Malaysia Champions Global Halal Innovation at MIHREC 2025

Malaysia Champions Global Halal Innovation at MIHREC 2025
2025-09-21 by Hafiz M. Ahmed

As I walk through the elegant halls of The Everly Hotel in Putrajaya, the energy at the Malaysia International Halal Research & Education Conference 2025 (MIHREC 2025) is unmistakable. Now in its third day, this landmark event—organized by Universiti Putra Malaysia’s Halal Products Research Institute (IPPH) and the National Institutes of Biotechnology Malaysia (NIBM)—is bringing together experts, policymakers, and business leaders from around the world to shape the future of the halal industry. With the global halal market expected to reach $3 trillion by 2030, Malaysia is cementing its role as a leader in this fast-growing sector.

Running from September 19 to 22, MIHREC 2025 operates daily from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., hosting sessions that blend cutting-edge research with practical solutions. The conference theme, “Driving Global Halal Innovation Towards Responsible Technology, Societal Wellbeing, and Regulatory Compliance,” sets the stage for discussions that are both visionary and grounded. Today’s focus on “Halal Integrity in the Digital Age” explored how technologies like blockchain and artificial intelligence (AI) can ensure trust in products like food and medicine, making halal standards clearer and more reliable for everyone.

Imagine a world where you can scan a product and instantly know it meets halal requirements from farm to table—that’s the kind of innovation being discussed here. One standout session tackled halal vaccines, showing how science can create medicines that align with Islamic principles while addressing global health needs. Attendees from countries like Japan, Indonesia, the UK, and the US are buzzing with ideas, sharing insights over coffee in Putrajaya’s modern conference venue.

The event’s keynote speakers are a major draw, delivering insights that are easy to grasp yet profound. On Friday, Dato’ Dr. Sirajuddin Suhaimee, head of Malaysia’s Department of Islamic Development (JAKIM), set the tone by highlighting how digital tools can streamline halal certification, positioning Malaysia as a global model. Mr. İhsan Övüt from the Standards and Metrology Institute for Islamic Countries (SMIIC) explained the need for unified rules to make halal products easier to trade worldwide. Prof. Dr. Mian Nadeem Riaz from Texas A&M University shared practical food science solutions, showing how Malaysia’s expertise can inspire others. Dr. Awal Fuseini from the UK emphasized sustainable halal meat production, connecting it to environmental care. Finally, Datin Paduka Hajah Hakimah Mohd Yusoff from Malaysia’s Prime Minister’s Department outlined policies to ensure the halal industry grows fairly for all.

MIHREC 2025 covers a wide range of topics, from halal biotechnology to tourism and Islamic finance. Over 150 research papers, selected from hundreds of submissions, are being presented, alongside workshops that guide businesses on meeting halal standards. I joined a lively panel on halal tourism, where experts discussed how to attract travelers seeking Muslim-friendly experiences post-COVID. These sessions are designed to be accessible, offering practical advice for everyone from small business owners to policymakers.

Backed by JAKIM’s authority and UPM’s research expertise, MIHREC is a trusted platform. On-site registration is still open at halal.upm.edu.my, with fees at RM1,000 for local students, RM1,300 for professionals, and RM900 for general attendees (international rates: USD360 for students/professionals, USD300 for attendees). These include meals, access to published proceedings, and even a special excursion. Some attendees, particularly from smaller businesses in developing countries, expressed a desire for simpler, budget-friendly ways to adopt digital tools like blockchain—a challenge likely to be addressed in tomorrow’s final sessions.

As MIHREC 2025 heads into its last day, anticipation is building for the closing plenary on future-proofing halal leadership and networking events that could spark new partnerships. For those unable to attend, IPPH will share the full proceedings post-event, ensuring these insights reach a global audience.

MIHREC 2025 proves that halal is more than a label—it’s a commitment to trust, quality, and innovation. Malaysia is leading the charge, and this conference is a must-follow for anyone interested in the future of ethical business. Visit halal.upm.edu.my for details.
