Islamic Tourism
Dhaka, Apr 24 (UNB) – Iranian city of Tabriz in East Azerbaijan Province will officially be regarded as the capital of Islamic tourism for a year for 2018 from Wednesday.
This had been announced at the three-day 10th Session of the Islamic Conference of Tourism Ministers (ICTM) of OIC held from February 5-7 at Sonargaon Hotel in the capital.
Dhaka was chosen as the “City of Tourism” for 2019 by the tourism ministers of the OIC member states at the closing session of the Conference of Tourism Ministers.
Bangladesh was selected as the Chairperson of the 10th ICTM for the next two years.
Tabriz is the largest economic hub and metropolitan area in Northwest Iran. The population is overwhelmingly Azerbaijani, though Persian is spoken by residents as a second language. The city is famous for its handicrafts, including hand-woven rugs and jewelry.
Officials at the Iran Cultural Centre in Dhaka told UNB that in synchronisation with the ‘Tabriz 2018’, they will also arrange some events to introduce the capital of Islamic tourism in Bangladesh focusing on the special region of tourism to attract the Bangladeshi visitors.
They said both Bangladesh and Iran are members of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). So, it will be easy for Bangladeshi nationals to visit Iran.
