BoK Inaugurates Women-Centric Islamic Banking Branch in Peshawar

Women-Centric Islamic Banking
2024-07-13 by Aamer Yaqub

PESHAWAR: The Bank of Khyber (BoK) has made a groundbreaking move by opening the first women-centric Islamic banking branch in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Situated in Deans Heights, Phase 2, Hayatabad, Peshawar, this innovative branch is designed to offer a dedicated space where women can comfortably manage their finances. The branch provides top-tier, Riba-free, and Shariah-compliant Islamic financial products and services, ensuring that women have access to the best financial solutions that align with their unique needs and religious principles.

A New Era for Women in Islamic Banking

Ali Khan Arbab, Group Head of Islamic Banking at BoK, emphasized the importance of creating a supportive environment tailored to women’s financial needs. “This branch is designed to be a place where women can feel comfortable and supported as they manage their finances. We are committed to providing the best Islamic financial products and services that align with their unique needs and dreams,” Arbab stated.

Recognition from the State Bank of Pakistan

The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has praised BoK’s initiative, recognizing it as a significant step toward promoting gender equality and financial inclusion for women. Dr. Muhammad Saleem, Additional Director of the Financial Inclusion Support Department at SBP, highlighted the broader impact of this initiative. “Empowering women through financial services not only enhances their prospects but also drives economic growth and societal prosperity,” Dr. Saleem noted.

The Importance of Financial Inclusion for Women

The opening of this women-centric Islamic banking branch marks a significant leap toward inclusive economic participation. It reflects BoK’s commitment to fostering an environment where women can thrive and contribute meaningfully to the economy. According to a report by the World Bank, increasing women’s financial inclusion can have a profound impact on economic development. When women have access to financial services, they can invest in their businesses, save for their futures, and improve their overall quality of life.

Tailored Financial Services

The women-centric branch offers a variety of financial services tailored specifically for women. These services include savings accounts, investment opportunities, and financing options that comply with Islamic principles. The branch also provides educational workshops and financial literacy programs to empower women with the knowledge they need to make informed financial decisions.

A Step Towards Gender Equality

BoK’s initiative is part of a broader effort to promote gender equality in the banking sector. By creating a space where women feel comfortable and supported, BoK is helping to break down the barriers that have traditionally kept women from fully participating in the financial system. This move is expected to inspire other banks in Pakistan and across the Muslim world to take similar steps towards financial inclusivity.

Global Context and Future Prospects

The concept of women-centric banking is gaining momentum globally. In many countries, financial institutions are recognizing the need to create products and services that cater specifically to women. According to the Global Findex Database, there is a significant gender gap in financial inclusion, with women being less likely than men to have access to financial services. Initiatives like BoK’s women-centric Islamic banking branch are crucial in bridging this gap.

The inauguration of BoK’s women-centric Islamic banking branch in Hayatabad is a landmark moment for financial inclusion and gender equality in Pakistan. By providing a supportive and tailored environment for women to manage their finances, BoK is paving the way for greater economic participation and empowerment for women. As more financial institutions adopt similar approaches, we can look forward to a future where women have equal access to financial services and opportunities.
