Halal Principles
2024-05-20 by Aamer Yaqub

Ankara, Turkey – The Ankara Halal Congress, held at the Conference Hall of the General Directorate of State Hydraulic Works, saw a powerful opening speech by Erbaş, who underscored the fundamental importance of halal principles in preserving human dignity and guiding ethical behavior.

The Essence of Halal and Haram

In his address, Erbaş emphasized that humans are endowed with superior qualities and must observe certain principles to maintain their dignity throughout their lives. He reminded the audience of the verse, “Say, ‘Indeed, my prayer, my rites of sacrifice, my living and my dying are for Allah, Lord of the worlds.’” Erbaş questioned, “Can a person who says this reach out for the forbidden, commit forbidden deeds or deviate from the permissible? Allah keeps us away from the forbidden.”

Erbaş pointed out the critical importance of distinguishing between halal (permissible) and haram (forbidden). He stressed, “The dimensions that our Lord has indicated as forbidden are essentially the matters that should be avoided as a result of the superior respect that human beings have for their Lord, themselves, and their surroundings, and as a result of an internalized consciousness that is continuous. The haram are our red lines.”

Erbaş elaborated on the significance of these boundaries, stating, “Essentially, the stance against these lines, which clearly define the quality of a person in terms of knowledge, existence, purpose, and ethics in the context of the relationship with the Creator and human qualities, and the attitudes and behaviors exhibited by one’s sound nature. Our Lord warns all believers on various occasions to stay within the halal boundaries.”

Halal Principles and Modern Challenges

The Congress also addressed contemporary challenges in adhering to halal principles. Experts discussed the rising demand for halal-certified products in global markets, emphasizing the economic potential and ethical responsibilities tied to the halal industry. With a market valued at over $2 trillion globally, the halal economy presents vast opportunities for growth and innovation, particularly in the food, finance, and tourism sectors.

Speakers at the event highlighted how adhering to halal principles can drive sustainable and ethical business practices. They stressed the need for robust certification processes to ensure that products meet stringent halal standards, which not only cater to the needs of Muslim consumers but also appeal to a growing number of non-Muslim consumers seeking ethically produced goods.

Erbaş and other speakers underscored the importance of education and awareness in promoting halal principles. They advocated for comprehensive educational programs to inform both producers and consumers about the benefits of halal products and services. By fostering a deeper understanding of halal principles, communities can better navigate the complexities of modern life while staying true to their ethical and religious values.

The Ankara Halal Congress concluded with a call to action for all stakeholders in the halal industry. Erbaş urged businesses, educators, and policymakers to work together in creating a cohesive and supportive environment for the growth of halal products and services. He emphasized that maintaining the integrity of halal principles is crucial for building trust and ensuring the well-being of all.

The Ankara Halal Congress highlighted the critical role of halal principles in guiding ethical behavior and fostering a sustainable global economy. By adhering to these principles, individuals and businesses can navigate the complexities of modern life with integrity and respect for their religious and ethical values.
