From Six Rupees to Around $3,000: The Egg That Funded a Mosque!

2024-04-16 by Hafiz M. Ahmed

In a heartwarming display of community support and devotion, a humble egg purchased for just six rupees became the centerpiece of an extraordinary event in Sopore, a town in the northern part of Srinagar, in Indian Occupied Kashmir. The egg, donated by a poor widow to aid the construction of a local mosque, ultimately gathered more than 200,000 rupees in donations through a unique auction process.

The mosque, under construction for several months in the Mal Mapan Pora village, had stalled due to a lack of funds. In a bid to continue building, the mosque committee decided to collect donations of cash and goods from local homes during Eid. Residents contributed various items, including cash, utensils, chickens, and rice.

During the collection, a committee member, Naseer Ahmad, received the egg from a widow living in a modest, dilapidated house with her only son. Initially uncertain of what to do with a single egg, the committee decided to auction it. The auction was meant to last for three days, but the response was overwhelming right from the start.

Naseer Ahmad kicked off the bidding at ten rupees from his own pocket. Bids quickly escalated, reaching tens of thousands of rupees, with the community rallying to turn the widow’s heartfelt donation into a substantial contribution. On the final day of the auction, local businessman Danish Hameed placed a bid of 70,000 rupees, bringing the total raised to 226,350 rupees.

Danish told BBC that while the identity of the egg’s donor was kept anonymous, everyone knew it had come from someone who could scarcely afford it, yet wanted to contribute to something greater than herself. “That thought was in my mind when I bid 70,000 rupees,” he explained.

The story of the egg didn’t end at the auction. Naseer has expressed his intention to preserve the egg as a symbol of pure and selfless emotions. He is arranging to have it framed, hoping it will remain a cherished artifact for his family and all who see it, reminding them of how a small act can resonate deeply within a community.

This event not only brought the village together but also highlighted the profound impact of community spirit and the unexpected value that can arise from the simplest acts of kindness.
