From Six Rupees to Around $3,000: The Egg That Funded a Mosque!

In Sopore, a town in the northern region of Srinagar in Indian-occupied Kashmir, a single egg—worth just six rupees—sparked an extraordinary wave of generosity that raised more than ₹226,000 for a local mosque under construction. A Mosque Project at a Standstill

The mosque in Mal Mapan Pora village had been under construction for months but progress came to a halt due to insufficient funds. Determined not to abandon the project, the mosque committee launched a community donation drive during Eid, encouraging residents to contribute whatever they could afford.

There were no expectations—only sincerity.

Villagers donated cash, rice, utensils, chickens, and other household items. Every contribution, no matter how small, was welcomed with gratitude.

A Widow’s Gift That Changed Everything

During the collection, committee member Naseer Ahmad visited a poor widow living in a crumbling house with her only son. With no savings and little food, she still wanted to contribute to the mosque.

All she had to offer was one egg.

What could easily have been overlooked instead became the heart of an unforgettable moment.

Naseer Ahmad began the auction himself, placing the first bid of ₹10 from his own pocket. What followed was nothing short of remarkable.

Within hours, bids climbed into the thousands. Over the next three days, the auction turned into a collective expression of respect—for the widow’s sacrifice and for the values the mosque represented.

On the final day, local businessman Danish Hameed placed the highest bid of ₹70,000, pushing the total amount raised to ₹226,350.

Speaking to the BBC, Danish explained why he was compelled to bid so high:

“Everyone knew the egg came from someone who had almost nothing. That thought stayed with me throughout the auction.”

More Than Money: Preserving a Symbol of Sincerity

The story did not end when the bidding closed.

Moved by the emotional weight of the widow’s donation, Naseer Ahmad announced plans to preserve the egg, having it framed as a symbol of pure intention and selfless giving. He hopes it will serve as a lasting reminder to future generations that sincerity matters more than wealth.
