Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – In a grand ceremony held at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC) in Kuala Lumpur, the Global Halal Summit 2023 (GHaS 2023) officially commenced today, September 12, 2023. The opening ceremony was graced by the presence of the Honourable Senator Dato’ Setia Dr. Haji Mohd Na’im bin Haji Mokhtar, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs), who delivered the welcoming remarks.
The ceremony began with the recitation of a verse from the holy Quran, emphasizing the importance of consuming what is lawful and good while avoiding the footsteps of Satan. It was a moment of reflection and spiritual significance, setting the tone for the event.
Minister Dato’ Setia Dr. Haji Mohd Na’im expressed gratitude to Allah SWT for the opportunity to gather at this prestigious international event focused on halal certification and the halal industry. He extended a warm welcome to the Honourable Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who graced the event with his presence, highlighting the government’s commitment to empower the halal certification management and ecosystem.
Delegates from 47 countries representing Halal Authorities and Halal Certification Bodies, along with industrial players and observers, were congratulated for their participation. The Minister acknowledged their presence and contribution to making the GHaS 2023 a global success.
The Minister extended his highest appreciation to the organizers of GHaS 2023, which includes JAKIM in collaboration with the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) and its three associated agencies: Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE), Halal Development Corporation (HDC), and Malaysian Standards Department (DSM). Their dedication was pivotal in ensuring the event’s success on an international scale.
GHaS 2023, spanning seven days from September 9th to 15th, 2023, includes various activities that bring together halal industry players from around the world. It involves 84 attendees from halal certification bodies recognized by JAKIM. The event comprises three significant programs: The 13th Halal Certification Bodies Convention (HCBC), Global Halal Industry Congress (GHIC), and Halal Technical Working Committee Meeting (MABIMS).
The Minister highlighted Malaysia’s commitment to halal verification, emphasizing its role in protecting Muslim consumers and the halal supply chain. He stressed the importance of continually empowering and evaluating halal certification bodies to maintain compliance with Malaysian procedures and standards.
GHaS 2023’s theme, “Integrity, Sustainability, and Resilience,” reflects the aspiration to develop a sustainable and resilient halal governance and ecosystem globally, without compromising on integrity values. JAKIM has launched the “Malaysian Halal Certification Initiative 2.0” to expedite the certification process while upholding integrity and Shariah compliance.
The Minister outlined key strategies for the future of halal certification, including standardization, transparency, technology integration, innovation, and expansion into diverse industries such as cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.
In closing, Minister Dato’ Setia Dr. Haji Mohd Na’im thanked all delegates for their commitment to the global halal empowerment and expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for officiating the Global Halal Summit 2023. He concluded with a call for prayers to receive Allah SWT’s blessings and grace for the ongoing efforts in the halal industry.
