Indonesia Updates Halal Certification Process

Halal Certification Process
2023-06-26 by Hafiz M. Ahmed

The demand for halal certification among businesses continues to grow, reflecting an increased understanding of its importance. This escalating interest is driving the Indonesian government to regularly update regulations that facilitate the halal certification process. One such revision came into effect in early 2023 under Law No. 6.

In Indonesia, the duration of halal certificate validity has undergone several changes due to regulatory updates. Under the previous regulations — Law No. 33 of 2014 and Law No. 11 of 2020 — halal certificates were valid for four years from the date of issuance by the BPJPH (Halal Product Assurance Organizing Agency). This validity period was upheld provided there were no changes in the composition of the product ingredients.

However, the latest amendment, Law No. 6 of 2023, significantly alters the validity period of a halal certificate. According to this regulation, “Halal certificates are valid from the time of issuance by the BPJPH and will remain so as long as there is no change in composition or in the halal product processor (PPH).”

The new legislation also introduces a more efficient halal product assurance system. Instead of a manual approach, it incorporates an integrated electronic application system run by various organizations, including the BPJPH, LPH, MUI, Provincial MUI, Regency/City MUI, Aceh MPU, and the Halal Product Fatwa Committee. This system enhances the traceability, speed, and ease of the halal certification process.

This overhaul of the halal certification process is expected to streamline industry operations, allowing the 2024 goal of all products being halal-certified to be realized more easily.
