Is McDonald’s Halal?
Short answer: it depends on the country. McDonald’s does not offer Halal food in its UK restaurants. JAKIM has said McDonald’s Malaysia holds a valid Halal certificate (2016 statement), and all McDonald’s restaurants in Singapore are Halal-certified by MUIS. In the US, a 2011 lawsuit over a Dearborn, Michigan location that sold a sandwich advertised as Halal ended in a $700,000 settlement. We have not verified the Halal status of every market, so check locally wherever you are.
Status by market (what we could verify)
United Kingdom: no Halal food
McDonald’s UK says it tested Halal food in one Southall restaurant, found that Halal-certified food appealed to only a small share of customers, and decided against offering it in UK restaurants “for the time being.” Its FAQ page is dated 2018, so check whether that position has changed.
Malaysia: JAKIM has said McDonald’s is certified
In a May 2016 statement, JAKIM said McDonald’s Malaysia was a valid halal certificate holder and followed its rules and standards. JAKIM later said the public should stop spreading false news about the chain’s halal status. That is the most recent JAKIM statement on McDonald’s we found, and it does not say whether every outlet is covered. Check the certificate displayed at your outlet.
Singapore: all restaurants halal-certified
McDonald’s Singapore says all its restaurants are halal-certified by MUIS, the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore.
United States: 2011 Dearborn case
In September 2011, a customer bought a McChicken sandwich advertised as halal at a Dearborn, Michigan franchise that had run out of halal chicken. The case was settled for $700,000. Afterward, two Michigan locations stopped selling halal items, according to Fox News and NBC News reporting. We did not find any current corporate halal certification for US restaurants.
