Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – Kazakhstan has identified Malaysia as a pivotal entry point to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), expressing a strong commitment to fortifying bilateral trade and investment relations, according to statements from high-level diplomatic engagements.
In a series of discussions held on the sidelines of the 6th Central Asia – ASEAN Dialogue in Kuala Lumpur on the occasion of MIHAS 2025, Kazakhstan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Trade and Integration, Bagdat Asarbayev, underscored Malaysia’s strategic importance in regional economic dynamics. “Malaysia serves as an ideal gateway for Kazakhstan to access the vibrant ASEAN market,” Asarbayev remarked, highlighting the nation’s robust infrastructure, business-friendly policies, and established trade networks.
The dialogue, which convened representatives from Central Asian nations and ASEAN member states, focused on enhancing economic cooperation amid evolving global trade landscapes. Asarbayev emphasized Kazakhstan’s aspirations to diversify its export portfolio, particularly in energy, agriculture, and technology sectors, through deeper integration with ASEAN economies.
Complementing these overtures, Malaysia’s Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry, Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz, welcomed the initiative. He noted that bilateral trade between the two countries reached approximately RM2.5 billion in 2024, with potential for exponential growth in halal products, renewable energy, and digital innovation. “We are eager to explore joint ventures that leverage Kazakhstan’s resource wealth and Malaysia’s manufacturing prowess,” Tengku Zafrul stated.
Key areas of collaboration identified during the talks include:
Trade Expansion: Streamlining customs procedures and negotiating preferential tariffs to boost non-oil exports from Kazakhstan.
Investment Opportunities: Encouraging Malaysian firms to invest in Kazakhstan’s special economic zones, while inviting Kazakh entities to participate in Malaysia’s burgeoning green technology initiatives.
Sector-Specific Partnerships: Joint projects in agribusiness, where Kazakhstan’s vast agricultural lands complement Malaysia’s expertise in palm oil and food processing.
This renewed focus on bilateral ties aligns with broader geopolitical shifts, as both nations navigate post-pandemic recovery and supply chain disruptions. Kazakhstan, a key player in the Eurasian Economic Union, sees ASEAN as a counterbalance to traditional Western markets, while Malaysia aims to solidify its role as a bridge between East and Central Asia.
Looking ahead, both sides agreed to establish a joint working group to draft a comprehensive action plan by mid-2026, targeting a 50% increase in bilateral trade volume. The commitment was sealed with a memorandum of understanding on trade facilitation, signed during the dialogue’s closing session.
As global economic uncertainties persist, the Kazakhstan-Malaysia partnership exemplifies the growing momentum in South-South cooperation, promising mutual benefits and regional stability.
