Malaysia has surged 11 places to secure the 23rd position in the World Competitiveness Ranking (WCR) 2025, marking its strongest performance since 2020. The remarkable improvement signals a resurgence in investor confidence and underscores the tangible progress of the MADANI Economic Framework, the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) announced in a press release today.
The WCR, compiled annually by the Institute for Management Development (IMD) in Switzerland, assesses 69 global economies based on four key pillars: economic performance, government efficiency, business efficiency, and infrastructure. It is widely regarded as a barometer of a country’s ability to create a resilient, dynamic, and business-conducive environment.
What Drove Malaysia’s Ascent?
According to MITI, several high-impact reforms and strategic shifts have contributed to the nation’s leap in competitiveness:
???????? Economic Performance: Malaysia ranked 4th globally, highlighting strong macroeconomic fundamentals, improved trade balances, and resilient consumer demand.
???? Government Efficiency: The country climbed 8 spots, thanks to better institutional frameworks, reduced bureaucratic red tape, and enhanced public-sector transparency.
???? Business Efficiency: Also up 8 positions, reflecting improved labor market productivity, entrepreneurial agility, and digital adoption by local businesses.
???? International Trade: Malaysia’s sub-ranking in this category jumped 11 places to 6th globally, driven by:
Diversified export markets
Strong growth in goods and services exports
A robust recovery in tourism receipts
Reform Momentum and Future Ambitions
MITI Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz emphasized that Malaysia’s performance is “not coincidental but the result of deliberate policy reforms that align bureaucracy with industrial strategy.” He highlighted ongoing federal-state collaboration and enhanced public-private sector synergy as key enablers of competitiveness.
“Our goal is clear — to position Malaysia among the top 12 most competitive economies globally by 2033. Today’s achievement shows we are on the right track,” he said.
The 2025 ranking reinforces Malaysia’s rising profile as a regional investment hub, especially in high-impact sectors such as green energy, advanced manufacturing, Islamic finance, and digital economy. With continued reform implementation under the MADANI framework, Malaysia aims to balance sustainable development, economic dynamism, and social inclusivity.
