Saudi Food and Drug Authority Streamlines Import Process for Cosmetic Products

Saudi Food and Drug Authority Streamlines Import Process for Cosmetic Products
2024-07-15 by Hafiz M. Ahmed

The Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) has launched a new initiative to simplify the import process for cosmetic product shipments. Importers can now obtain a certificate of conformity from the destination country through the “Cosmetic Products Clearance” system. This innovative approach aims to enhance efficiency and speed up the clearance process.

Key Features of the New System

  1. Automated Appointment of Conformity Companies: The system automates the process of appointing conformity companies, reducing manual intervention and potential delays.
  2. Electronic Submission of Clearance Requests: Importers can submit their clearance requests electronically, streamlining the process and ensuring quicker approvals.
  3. Integration with the “Ghad” System: Importers must register their products and obtain necessary licenses through the “Ghad” system at ghad.sfda.gov.sa. This integration ensures that all product information is centralized and easily accessible.

Step-by-Step Process for Importers

  1. Register Products and Obtain Licenses: Importers need to register their cosmetic products and secure the necessary licenses via the “Ghad” system.
  2. Log in to the Clearance Services System: After registration, importers can access the clearance services system and select the cosmetic products they wish to import.
  3. Enter Product Data: Detailed data for each imported cosmetic product must be entered into the system.
  4. Review and Clearance Procedures: The SFDA will review the application and complete clearance procedures before the shipment reaches the port.

Benefits of the Cosmetic Products Clearance System

  • Standardized Procedures: The system standardizes the entire clearance process, ensuring consistency and reliability.
  • Submission and Tracking: Importers can submit and track their clearance requests easily, providing transparency and peace of mind.
  • Multiple User Access: The system allows multiple users from the same importer to access and manage the clearance process.
  • Access to Conformity Assessment Bodies: Importers can connect with more conformity assessment bodies, broadening their options.
  • Responsive to Comments and Inquiries: The system facilitates prompt responses to any comments or inquiries from conformity assessment and central clearance bodies.
  • Issuance of Shipment Conformity Certificates: The system expedites the issuance of shipment conformity certificates, ensuring quicker market access.

Impressive

Over 4,000 Cosmetic Importers Registered: The SFDA has reported a substantial number of registered importers in the system.

  • More than 70,000 Clearance Requests Processed: The system has successfully processed a large volume of clearance requests, showcasing its efficiency.
  • Over 50,000 Shipment Conformity Certificates Issued: The high number of issued certificates highlights the system’s capability to handle large-scale operations.

The SFDA’s “Cosmetic Products Clearance” system marks a significant step towards modernizing the import process for cosmetic products, offering a seamless and efficient experience for importers. By leveraging technology and automating key processes, the SFDA is setting new standards in regulatory compliance and import management.
