Saudia Arabia Unveils Air Taxi Service for Hajj Pilgrims

2024-01-23 by Hafiz M. Ahmed

In a pioneering move, Saudia, renowned as Saudi Arabian Airlines, the esteemed national flag carrier of Saudi Arabia, has unveiled a transformative initiative poised to redefine the pilgrimage journey for Hajj pilgrims traveling from Jeddah to Mecca. This strategic development involves Saudia acquiring a fleet of approximately 100 advanced eVTOL Lilium jets, marking a significant advancement in sustainable aviation and eco-friendly travel.

Enhancing Pilgrimage Experience from Jeddah to Mecca with Electric Aircraft

Designed and manufactured in Germany, these eVTOL (electrical vertical take-off and landing) Lilium jets are at the forefront of sustainable aviation technology. Saudia’s commitment to environmental stewardship is evident in its choice of these electric aircraft, which will transport pilgrims efficiently from Jeddah’s King Abdulaziz International Airport directly to Makkah. The eVTOL Lilium jets, capable of carrying four to six passengers over a range of up to 250 kilometers, are a testament to the airline’s dedication to innovative, sustainable travel solutions.

Abdullah Al-Shahrani, a Saudia Group spokesperson, shared with Al-Arabiya the vision behind this initiative. “The electric plane Lilium, leading the way in electric power aviation, will be instrumental during the Hajj and Umrah seasons, facilitating a smooth journey for the guests of God from King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah to Makkah,” he stated. This initiative not only caters to the needs of Hajj pilgrims but also aligns with global environmental objectives.

Saudia’s Vision for Sustainable Pilgrimage Journeys

While the initial focus is on Hajj pilgrims traveling from Jeddah to Mecca, Saudia envisages expanding the use of these eVTOL Lilium jets across various destinations within the Kingdom. This move reflects Saudia’s broader vision of enhancing air transport efficiency and sustainability throughout Saudi Arabia.

“Adopting emission-free aviation technology through these electric aircraft is a strategic step towards improving the air transport sector in the Kingdom. It significantly contributes to the sustainability of the tourism sector,” Al-Shahrani emphasized, highlighting Saudia’s role in pioneering sustainable aviation innovations.
