Southern Halal Expo in Phuket To Boost Tourism and Economy

2024-06-05 by Aamer Yaqub
Phuket is set to host the much-anticipated “Southern Halal Expo,” an event poised to significantly impact the region’s tourism and economy. The announcement was made with the presence of several key figures, including Nuanchan Samart Khumban, President of the Phuket Andaman Muslim Women’s Association, Lertchai Wangtrakuldee, Director of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) Phuket Office, and Wirintra Paphakityotphat, head of the Tourism Council of Thailand (TCT) Region 11 branch, which represents Phuket, Phang Nga, and Krabi.

A Platform for Halal Products and Cultural Exchange

Nuanchan Samart Khumban, chairperson of the event, emphasized that the “Southern Halal Expo” will showcase a diverse array of Halal products, from food and beverages to Muslim clothing. The expo aims to highlight the rich cultural tapestry of the region, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of Halal products and Muslim culture.

In addition to the product exhibitions, the event will feature special religious lectures by experts and leading academics. These lectures are designed to promote community participation and nurture a multicultural society in Phuket and the broader southern region.

Stimulating Tourism During the Low Season

TAT Phuket Chief Lertchai Wangtrakuldee underscored the event’s potential to stimulate tourism during the low season. He noted that the “Southern Halal Expo” is expected to attract Muslim and Arab tourists from neighboring countries such as Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia. These tourists, he highlighted, play a crucial role in bolstering Phuket’s economy.

Boosting Local Entrepreneurship

Lertchai further emphasized that the expo would not only attract tourists but also help develop the entrepreneurial potential of Halal products for local providers. By providing a platform for local businesses to showcase their products, the expo aims to empower entrepreneurs and enhance the economic prospects of the region.

Promoting Muslim Culture and Halal Tourism

Ms. Wirintra Paphakityotphat expressed her enthusiasm for the “Southern Halal Expo,” stating that it would elevate Phuket’s tourism industry by welcoming a diverse range of tourists and promoting Muslim culture and Halal tourism. “The event will enhance the visibility of Halal products and tourism in Phuket and the southern region, contributing to the development of soft power in the future,” she said.

Latest Facts and Figures

According to recent statistics, the global Halal market is projected to reach $2.4 trillion by 2024, with significant growth driven by the food and beverage sector. Thailand, with its rich cultural heritage and diverse tourist attractions, is well-positioned to tap into this burgeoning market. Phuket, in particular, has seen a steady increase in Muslim tourists, with a reported 20% rise in visitors from Muslim-majority countries over the past year.

The “Southern Halal Expo” in Phuket is more than just an exhibition; it’s a celebration of culture, community, and economic potential. By bringing together a diverse range of products and promoting cross-cultural understanding, the event is set to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of Halal tourism in the region.

As Phuket prepares to host this landmark event, the local community, businesses, and tourists alike can look forward to a vibrant and enriching experience. The “Southern Halal Expo” promises to be a catalyst for economic growth, cultural exchange, and a stronger, more inclusive tourism industry in Phuket and beyond.
