Syria Secures $14 Billion Investment Deals Covering Metro and Airport Projects

Syria Secures $14 Billion Investment Deals Covering Metro and Airport Projects
2025-08-07 by Laiba Adnan

Syria has signed a major investment package worth $14 billion with the aim of rebuilding and improving its key infrastructure. These deals include big projects such as expanding the Damascus International Airport, building a new metro system in the capital city, and launching several real estate developments.

This marks one of the most important economic moves in Syria since the country started recovering from years of conflict. The agreements were signed during a large event in Damascus attended by top government officials and foreign investors.

Focus on Transport and Urban Development

$4 Billion to Expand Damascus Airport

One of the biggest parts of this deal is the $4 billion plan to expand Damascus International Airport. This project will add a third terminal to the airport, helping it handle up to 31 million passengers every year. The aim is to improve international travel and bring in more business and tourism.

This expansion will make Syria better connected to the region and the world, supporting trade and creating many jobs in the aviation and construction sectors.

$2 Billion for New Metro System in Damascus

Another major project under these deals is the construction of a modern metro system in Damascus, worth $2 billion. The metro will help reduce traffic in the crowded capital and is expected to serve around 750,000 passengers daily once it becomes operational.

The project will make daily commuting easier for people and improve overall transportation in the city. It also shows the government’s focus on modern, eco-friendly public transport.

$2 Billion Real Estate Project: Damascus Towers

A $2 billion investment has also been announced for a new housing and commercial project called Damascus Towers. The project will include residential apartments, shopping centers, and office buildings. It is expected to attract both local and international businesses, bringing in jobs and economic activity.

Additional Development Projects

Besides the airport, metro, and tower projects, Syria has also approved several smaller but important projects:

  • Baramkeh Towers: A $500 million real estate development aimed at providing modern homes and office spaces.

  • Baramkeh Mall: A $60 million shopping complex expected to become a retail hub in Damascus.

  • Road and bridge repairs: Several agreements have been made to rebuild roads and bridges damaged during the war.

  • Industrial zones: New industrial areas will be developed to attract factories and create jobs.

In total, 12 projects were signed as part of the $14 billion package. All are part of Syria’s broader plan to rebuild and grow its economy.

Why These Deals Matter

These investments are some of the largest Syria has seen in recent years. After more than a decade of war, the country is now focusing on rebuilding its economy and infrastructure. The deals bring much-needed hope to ordinary Syrians and show that the country is open to working with international partners.

Benefits of the deals include:

  • Creation of thousands of new jobs

  • Better public transport for daily commuters

  • Improved airport services for travelers

  • More housing and business space

  • Growth in tourism, trade, and foreign investment

These changes could help bring stability and a better quality of life to many Syrians.

Recent Economic Improvements

This is not the first major investment Syria has received in 2025. Earlier this year:

  • A $7 billion energy deal was signed with a group of companies from Qatar, Turkey, and the United States. It aims to improve Syria’s electricity supply by building new power plants.

  • In July, Saudi Arabia signed $6.4 billion worth of agreements with Syria. These included projects in energy, agriculture, housing, and health.

Together with the new $14 billion package, these deals show growing international interest in helping Syria rebuild.

Government’s Vision for the Future

The Syrian government says these projects are just the beginning. According to officials, the country’s full reconstruction needs are estimated at between $250 to $400 billion. While this number is very large, the government believes that steady investment from friendly nations and international companies can help cover the cost over time.

The projects are also meant to show that Syria is ready to move forward and become part of the global economy again.

President Ahmed al-Sharaa, who is leading the country’s transition, said that Syria is “open for investment and committed to building a better future.”

Challenges Ahead

Even though the investment news brings hope, there are still some challenges that need to be addressed:

  • Delays and red tape: Projects of this size require careful planning and permits, which can sometimes slow things down.

  • Security concerns: Although the war is over in most parts of the country, there are still areas with safety risks that could affect construction work.

  • Funding clarity: Some experts say the government has not fully explained how the deals will be funded, and whether loans, grants, or private capital will be used.

  • Public trust: People in Syria are eager to see real changes on the ground. Many say they will believe in the benefits only after they see progress.

What Comes Next?

Now that the deals have been signed, the focus will move to action. The first steps will include:

  • Beginning construction work on the airport and metro system

  • Setting up offices for real estate and industrial development teams

  • Hiring local workers and contractors

  • Arranging the flow of materials and machinery into Syria

The Syrian Investment Authority says progress updates will be shared regularly to keep the public informed.

If these projects go well, they could lead to more deals in the near future. Other countries in the region, including the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Italy, are already showing interest in future partnerships with Syria.

The signing of $14 billion in investment deals is a major step forward for Syria. It shows that after years of war, the country is ready to rebuild its cities, connect with the world, and improve daily life for its people.

With strong support from international investors, these projects could help Syria become a stable and growing country once again.

Now all eyes are on how quickly the government and its partners can turn plans into action—and deliver real benefits for the people of Syria.
