Thailand Aims to Lead as Regional Halal Hub

2024-05-31 by Aamer Yaqub

The global halal market is a lucrative and rapidly growing sector, currently valued at a staggering $2.3 trillion. With projections indicating a rise to $2.8 trillion by 2025, Thailand is positioning itself to become a major player in this expansive market. The Ministry of Industry has spearheaded this initiative by establishing the Thai Halal Industry Centre, aiming to capture a significant share of this booming industry.

A Vision for Leadership

Industry Minister Pimpatra Wichaikul is leading the charge to make Thailand the regional halal industry hub. The Thai halal industry encompasses a diverse range of products and services, including food, cosmetics, fashion, and tourism. The Ministry’s strategy involves the creation of the National Halal Industry Committee (NHIC), which will play a crucial role in enhancing the standards and capabilities of domestic halal entrepreneurs.

“Our goal is to elevate Thailand’s position in the halal industry through the establishment of this centre and the formation of the NHIC,” Wichaikul stated. “We aim to boost the competitiveness of our halal products and services both locally and globally.”

Expanding Export Markets

A key component of this initiative is the expansion of exports to potential global markets. The food and beverage sector, which holds the largest market share at 63%, is a particular focus. The global halal food market alone is valued at approximately $1.4 trillion and is expected to double within the next five years. This growth is driven by the rapidly increasing global Muslim population, highlighting the immense potential for Thailand’s halal food industry.

Strategic Leadership and Collaboration

The establishment of the NHIC was officially sanctioned by the Prime Minister on April 17, 2024. The Prime Minister serves as the chairperson, with Nalinee Taveesin, the Thai Trade representative, overseeing halal industry development, and Industry Minister Wichaikul as vice-chair. The committee also includes representatives from 21 key agencies involved in Thailand’s halal sector.

The NHIC is tasked with formulating policies and development strategies for halal products, integrating Thailand’s unique “soft power”, and coordinating policies, measures, and plans to effectively drive the development of the country’s halal industry. This coordinated effort aims to position Thailand as a leader in the production and export of halal products in the region.

Three Main Missions

In its first year, the ministry will focus on advancing the Thai halal industry through three main missions:

  1. Establishing the Centre: The Thai Halal Industry Centre will support the ecosystem of Thailand’s halal industry, providing a solid foundation for growth and development.
  2. Raising Awareness: Efforts will be made to enhance awareness of Thailand’s halal industry potential both domestically and internationally. This includes promoting the quality and diversity of Thai halal products and services.
  3. Promoting Trade and Market Expansion: The ministry will actively promote trade and market expansion globally, leveraging Thailand’s strategic location and robust trade relationships to penetrate new markets.

The Future of Thailand’s Halal Industry

Thailand’s ambition to become the regional halal industry hub is underpinned by strategic planning, government support, and a commitment to excellence. By establishing the Thai Halal Industry Centre and the NHIC, the country is poised to capitalize on the burgeoning halal market, ensuring that its halal products and services are recognized and sought after worldwide.

As the global demand for halal products continues to rise, Thailand’s proactive approach and strategic initiatives position it well to become a leader in the halal industry. With a focus on quality, innovation, and market expansion, Thailand is set to make significant strides in this dynamic and rapidly growing sector.

This comprehensive strategy not only aims to boost the nation’s economy but also to solidify Thailand’s reputation as a premier destination for halal products and services.
