Thailand Ranks Among Top Travel Destinations for Muslim Tourists

Muslim-Friendly Travel
2024-07-07 by Aamer Yaqub

Thailand has rapidly risen as a premier Muslim-friendly travel destination, ranking fifth among non-Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) countries, according to the Global Muslim Travel Index (GMTI) 2024. Achieving a strong GMTI score of 52, Thailand is just behind top destinations like Singapore and Hong Kong. This ranking highlights Thailand’s dedication to improving the travel experience for Muslim tourists by offering a wide range of halal food options and Muslim-friendly amenities. With comprehensive policies and strategic plans, Thailand is poised to become a leading destination for Muslim travelers globally.

Commitment to Muslim-Friendly Amenities

Thailand’s impressive ranking is attributed to its continuous efforts to improve halal food options and incorporate Muslim-friendly amenities such as prayer rooms in tourist attractions. The country’s government has shown clear and comprehensive policies to support Muslim travelers, evidenced by the Tourism Department’s five-year development plan. This plan aims to establish Thailand as the “halal hub” of Southeast Asia by 2027, expanding the halal industry across the food, apparel, services, and tourism sectors.

Strategic Initiatives and Growth

Thailand’s strategy to boost its Muslim tourism market includes targeting tourists from the Middle East and diversifying its tourism base. Piroon Rojanakamolsan, Vice President of Mastercard, noted that Thailand consistently ranks high in the GMTI, highlighting the country’s dedication to catering to Muslim travelers. The latest report findings are expected to help local tourism operators and government officials refine their services to better meet the needs of Muslim tourists.

Digital Advancements and Halal Integration

Thailand’s ambition to become Southeast Asia’s “halal hub” also involves integrating digital technologies into travel, such as making payments safe, smart, and accessible. Mastercard supports this initiative with advanced payment solutions to enhance the travel experience for Muslim tourists. The country is actively working on making all aspects of travel more seamless and enjoyable for Muslim visitors, from finding halal food to locating prayer rooms and mosques.

Regional Rankings and Trends

Southeast Asia remains a popular region for Muslim tourists, with Malaysia and Indonesia leading among OIC destinations, and Singapore ranking first among non-OIC destinations. According to CrescentRating founder and CEO Fazal Bahardeen, the overall scores in the GMTI have risen by 10%, reflecting increased consideration for Muslim travelers. The Muslim travel market is expected to grow significantly, with international arrivals projected to reach 168 million worldwide this year, surpassing pre-pandemic levels by up to 5%  (Thaiger).

Technological Innovations

The growth in the Muslim travel market is driven by demographic and economic expansion, cultural and halal tourism development, and technological advancements. Innovations such as apps that locate halal food outlets, Qibla directions, and prayer times are enhancing personalized travel experiences. Artificial intelligence is further customizing travel logistics while adhering to faith traditions.

Future Prospects

Thailand’s dedication to improving its Muslim-friendly travel offerings positions it as a top destination for global Muslim travelers. The country’s rich cultural heritage, diverse natural landscapes, and comprehensive policies make it an attractive choice for those seeking a welcoming and accommodating travel experience.

Thailand’s strategic investments, robust international collaborations, and unwavering focus on sustainable development are positioning it as a top destination for Muslim travelers. These efforts are not only enhancing the travel experience for Muslim tourists but also unlocking significant economic opportunities and fostering cultural exchange. With initiatives such as expanding halal food options, improving Muslim-friendly amenities, and integrating advanced digital technologies, Thailand is set to attract a growing number of Muslim visitors, further solidifying its status as a leading global travel destination.
