Crown Takaful Insurance Limited has approved a N100.9 million surplus payout to participants in Nigeria, in its first year after NAICOM licensed it in 2024.

2026-08-07 by Hafiz M. Ahmed

Crown Takaful Insurance Limited has approved a N100.9 million surplus payout to participants in its first year of operations, according to Leadership. Leadership reported gross contributions of N1.94 billion for that period, while The Sun Nigeria put 2024 financial-year contributions at approximately N1.935 billion, after the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) licensed the operator in 2024.

Returning underwriting surplus to participants is one of the features that distinguishes takaful from conventional insurance, and two Nigerian operators have moved to do it. Crown Takaful has approved a N100.9 million surplus payout in its first year, per Leadership, while Noor Takaful’s cumulative distribution has passed N1.3 billion, per THISDAY.

A Promise Kept

The surplus distribution was approved by the NAICOM Board, Leadership reported. Crown Takaful’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Nasir Abubakar Song, framed the approval as more than a regulatory step. “This approval is not just a regulatory milestone; it is a promise kept,” Song said, per Leadership. He added that the company remains focused on “expanding access to ethical insurance solutions for individuals, families and businesses,” The Sun Nigeria reported. Other Nigerian outlets reported the same core facts on August 6 and 7, 2026.

Under the takaful model, participants contribute to a common fund, and whatever remains after claims, re-Takaful expenses, and statutory reserves are covered is returned to those participants rather than retained as insurer profit. That’s the structure Crown Takaful frames around “mutual cooperation, fairness and shared responsibility,” and it’s a model Halal Times has covered in its comparison of takaful and mutual funds. Leadership reported that Crown Takaful is among the early operators in Nigeria’s takaful industry to distribute surplus to participants within its first operational year.

Noor Takaful’s Unbroken Surplus Record

Noor Takaful Insurance Limited has a longer track record. The company, alongside Noor Health Limited, has operated since 2017 and has maintained an unbroken run of annual surplus distributions every year since, THISDAY reported, putting cumulative surplus distributed at over N1.3 billion.

Noor Takaful Managing Director Rilwan Sunmonu tied that record to the model’s core promise. “Since commencing operations in 2017, Noor Takaful has consistently fulfilled one of the most distinctive promises of the Takaful model by returning surplus to eligible participants every single year,” Sunmonu said, per THISDAY. TheCable reported that following this year’s distribution, at the 2026 Surplus Distribution Ceremony on Tuesday, August 11, in Lagos, the company will have returned more than N1.3 billion in surplus to participants, making it the largest and most consistent distributor of takaful surplus in Nigeria.

Halal Times has previously reported on non-interest finance at the Nigerian Exchange and on the country’s halal economy. The Crown Takaful approval and the coming Noor Takaful ceremony add the insurance side of that record.

The August 11 ceremony will bring together regulators, participants, enrollees, healthcare providers, brokers, and corporate partners, TheCable reported. At the same event, Noor Health will become the first Health Maintenance Organisation in Nigeria to distribute surplus to its eligible enrollees, extending surplus-sharing from insurance into healthcare financing.
