Eid al-Adha Initiative: Awqaf SA and Diyanet Support Kimberley NGOs

Eid al-Adha Initiative: Awqaf SA and Diyanet Support Kimberley NGOs
2024-06-24 by Aamer Yaqub

In a remarkable effort to alleviate hunger and support local NGOs, the non-governmental organization Awqaf SA, in collaboration with Türkiye’s religious body Diyanet, will distribute hygiene and meat packs to several NGOs in Kimberley during the upcoming week. This initiative is part of the Islamic festival of Eid al-Adha, a time traditionally marked by acts of charity and sacrifice.

Supporting Local NGOs in Kimberley

For the first time, Awqaf SA will extend its charitable efforts to local organizations in Kimberley, an area often overlooked by international sponsors. Hasanain Abdullah, the project manager of Awqaf SA, emphasized the importance of this outreach. “We will be donating to the Kimberley Muslim Senior Citizens and Galeshewe Senior Citizens. This marks the beginning of what we hope will be a continuous and supportive relationship with these organizations,” said Abdullah.

Addressing the Needs of Underfunded Areas

Abdullah highlighted the disparity in support between metropolitan areas and smaller communities like Kimberley. “Most sponsors focus on larger cities, leaving smaller communities without much-needed assistance. By targeting these local NGOs, we aim to fill that gap and provide essential support where it is most needed,” he explained.

Fundraising Efforts and Community Engagement

In addition to the donation of hygiene and meat packs, Awqaf SA will host a fundraising dinner for dignitaries at the Kimberley Club Boutique Hotel. This event aims to raise further funds and awareness of the ongoing needs of local NGOs in the area. “We envision this as the first of many initiatives to support local organizations continuously,” Abdullah stated.

Impact and Reach of the Initiative

This year, Awqaf SA and its partners have made significant strides in their charitable efforts. “We have sacrificed up to 120 tonnes of meat, involving over 600 animals, targeting close to 200,000 people directly,” Abdullah reported. The logistics of delivering these meat packs across South Africa are being managed by members of the Imam Development Programme, a venture supported by Awqaf SA and Mercy Mission South Africa. This program aims to develop dynamic and inspirational imams who can lead and support their communities effectively.

Easing the Burden of Food Shortages

The donation of meat packs comes at a crucial time, as local organizations face food shortages during the cold winter months. “We hope that our contribution will ease the burden of food shortages for these local NGOs and provide relief to those in need,” Abdullah expressed. The initiative underscores the broader goal of Awqaf SA and its partners to assist thousands of organizations across the country, ensuring that the spirit of Eid al-Adha is felt by all.

Awqaf SA’s collaboration with Diyanet to support local NGOs in Kimberley is a significant step towards addressing food insecurity and supporting underfunded communities. By focusing on local needs and fostering ongoing relationships with smaller organizations, Awqaf SA is making a lasting impact. This initiative not only brings immediate relief but also highlights the importance of inclusive and widespread charitable efforts during Eid al-Adha and beyond.
