Extreme Heat Predicted for Hajj Pilgrimage This Year

Extreme Heat Predicted for Hajj Pilgrimage This Year
2024-06-07 by Aamer Yaqub
As the Hajj season approaches, the Saudi National Center for Meteorology (NCM) has issued a crucial weather forecast for the holy sites, alerting pilgrims to prepare for extremely hot conditions. This year, temperatures are expected to soar between 45°C to 48°C in the afternoons, posing significant health risks. Additionally, strong surface winds during the day may lead to dust and sandstorms, especially in open areas and on highways. Understanding these weather conditions and taking appropriate precautions is essential for a safe and successful pilgrimage. Pilgrims are advised to stay informed about weather updates, follow safety guidelines, and take necessary measures to protect themselves from the intense heat and potential dust storms.

Weather Preparations and Predictions

Ayman bin Salem Ghulam, the CEO of the NCM, shared these insights during a press conference in Makkah. While the likelihood of rain is low, thunderclouds might form over the highlands of Taif City, possibly affecting the holy sites. Humidity levels could also reach over 60 percent.

To ensure the safety of the pilgrims, the NCM has implemented a comprehensive plan to monitor weather conditions around the clock at the holy sites, Madinah, airports, ports, and main roads. This includes deploying mobile radar systems to monitor the skies over the sacred sites and the Grand Mosque and mobile stations to observe upper atmospheric layers and provide satellite imagery for potential weather phenomena.

Coordination and Preparedness

In preparation for this year’s Hajj, the NCM has held several coordination meetings, workshops, and training sessions. The latest session, titled “The Climate Impact of this year’s Hajj,” saw participation from over 44 relevant parties. The center has also conducted exercises to enhance readiness, review severe weather phenomena, and test reporting mechanisms to ensure timely information reaches all relevant parties.

A media production center has been established in Mina to provide services to pilgrims, including those with special needs. This center will broadcast daily weather bulletins and safety messages across 12 media channels to ensure the safety of pilgrims.

Innovative Measures for Pilgrim Safety

To combat the extreme heat, various sectors in Saudi Arabia have implemented several innovative measures. Misting devices will be deployed across all locations to help reduce temperatures, and pathways will be paved with cool-colored materials. Unique camps equipped to the highest standards have also been prepared to ensure a comfortable stay for the pilgrims.

Abdulaziz Al-Harbi, the general supervisor of Hajj affairs, has indicated that this year’s Hajj will witness an increase in surface temperatures above the norm in Makkah and Madinah. He also anticipates above-average rainfall at the holy sites.

Pilgrims’ Perspectives and Safety Tips

Pilgrims are advised to take necessary precautions to stay safe and healthy during their pilgrimage. Asmaa Oulid, a Moroccan pilgrim, shared her experience, noting that Hajj company supervisors have emphasized the importance of staying hydrated, using umbrellas, and avoiding direct sun exposure to cope with the extreme heat. “Following the guidelines is crucial since temperatures can exceed 45°C,” she said. “While the pilgrimage will be tiring and exhausting, the reward is worth the effort. I hope this experience will be comfortable for the elderly, and that all pilgrims will return safely to their families.”

Nasser Bukhari, a Saudi pilgrim, echoed these sentiments, highlighting the comprehensive preparations made to mitigate the effects of the heat. “Despite the expected rise in temperatures this year, all sectors in Saudi Arabia have made extensive preparations, including the deployment of misting devices and cool-colored pathways,” he said. “Additionally, unique camps equipped to the highest standards have been prepared this year.”

With the Hajj weather expected to be extremely hot this year, pilgrims need to follow the safety guidelines provided by the authorities. By staying hydrated, using protective measures like umbrellas, and adhering to the instructions, pilgrims can ensure a safer and more comfortable experience during their sacred journey.
