How Ithra’s Islamic Art Conference is Shaping the Future of Mosque Design
2024-08-04 by Aamer Yaqub

The King Abdulaziz Centre for World Culture, commonly known as Ithra, is set to host the highly anticipated Second Islamic Art Conference from November 25 to 30, 2024. Following the success of its inaugural conference in 2021, this year’s event promises to be a groundbreaking exploration of new approaches to mosque design and Islamic art. With its focus on blending tradition with innovation, the conference will provide a dynamic platform for showcasing contemporary practices and inspiring future developments in the field.

Islamic Art Conference: From Historical Appreciation to Future Innovations

The inaugural Islamic Art Conference, held in November 2021 under the theme “The Mosque: Innovation in Object, Form, and Function,” was a milestone in examining how historical and artistic perspectives can inform our understanding of mosque design. This initial conference delved deeply into the evolution of mosque architecture and its artistic elements, offering valuable insights into the historical significance of Islamic art.

Building on this foundation, the 2024 Islamic Art Conference, titled “In Praise of the Artisan: A Reassessment of Contemporary Islamic Arts & Crafts Practice,” will pivot towards a forward-looking perspective. The conference will not only celebrate the rich heritage of Islamic arts and crafts but will also focus on encouraging novel mosque designs and inspiring innovative approaches to Islamic art.

Partnership and Program: A Comprehensive Approach

This year’s conference is being held in partnership with the Abdul Latif Alfozan Award for Mosque Architecture, reflecting a commitment to integrating both traditional and contemporary perspectives in mosque design. The event will feature a robust program designed to engage attendees in multiple ways:

Exploring New Dimensions in Mosque Design

One of the key objectives of this year’s conference is to inspire new approaches to mosque design. By emphasizing innovative planning and design ideas, the conference aims to encourage architects and designers to explore fresh concepts that can redefine the identity of Islamic art in the context of mosque architecture.

Mashary Al Naim, Secretary-General of the Abdul Latif Alfozan Award for Mosque Architecture, articulated the vision behind this shift. “Our goal is to unearth new ideas from around the world for designing mosques. We want to stimulate innovative thinking and encourage novel approaches that can contribute to a new identity for Islamic art. This conference is about looking beyond traditional forms and exploring how Islamic art can evolve to meet contemporary needs.”

The Exhibition: A Showcase of Global Craftsmanship

An integral part of the conference is the exhibition titled “In Praise of the Artisan,” which will be inaugurated on the first day and remain open to the public after the conference concludes. This exhibition, organized in collaboration with the al-Sabah Collection at Kuwait’s Dar al-Athar Al Islamiyyah, promises to be a highlight of the event.

The exhibition will feature a diverse array of works, including:

  • Historical Artifacts: Among the standout pieces is a 17th-century hand-carved stone screen, reportedly the largest of its kind constructed after the Taj Mahal. This artifact exemplifies the grandeur and intricacy of traditional Islamic craftsmanship.
  • Commissioned Works: The exhibition will include eight specially commissioned pieces by master artisans, showcasing the creativity and skill of contemporary Islamic artists.
  • Contemporary Art: Attendees will have the opportunity to view modern works by artisans from various countries, including India, Spain, Uzbekistan, Malaysia, and Turkey. These pieces reflect the global nature of Islamic art and the innovative approaches being explored across different regions.

The Conference’s Broader Impact

The Islamic Art Conference serves as a vital platform for advancing the understanding and appreciation of Islamic arts and crafts. By focusing on both traditional and contemporary practices, the conference aims to bridge the gap between historical heritage and modern innovation.

Abdullah Al-Rashid, Director of Ithra, emphasized the significance of the conference in promoting cultural heritage and creative expression. “The Islamic Art Conference aligns with Ithra’s mission to celebrate cultural heritage, foster talent development, and support creative expression. Our collaboration with esteemed institutions enhances the conference’s impact, offering an immersive experience that educates visitors about the richness of Islamic handicrafts and the diversity of artisanship from the Middle East and beyond.”

Engaging with Islamic Art

The conference provides numerous opportunities for attendees to engage with Islamic art in meaningful ways. From interactive workshops to live demonstrations, participants will gain hands-on experience and insights into the techniques and practices that define Islamic craftsmanship.

For architects and designers, the conference offers a chance to explore new design paradigms and innovative approaches to mosque architecture. The discussions and presentations will provide valuable inspiration and practical ideas for integrating contemporary concepts with traditional aesthetics.

For art enthusiasts and scholars, the conference and exhibition offer a comprehensive view of the evolution of Islamic art, highlighting both historical and modern contributions. The diverse range of works and discussions will deepen participants’ understanding of the cultural and artistic significance of Islamic craftsmanship.

Ithra’s Second Islamic Art Conference promises to be a landmark event in the exploration of mosque design and Islamic art. By focusing on future innovations while honoring traditional practices, the conference aims to inspire and educate participants from around the world. The integration of exhibitions, discussions, and interactive sessions will provide a rich and immersive experience, contributing to the ongoing dialogue about the evolution of Islamic art and its role in contemporary society.

For those interested in the future of mosque design and Islamic art, the conference offers a unique opportunity to engage with cutting-edge developments and participate in a global conversation about the future of this vibrant field.
