Injury Leads M’sian Engineer to Flourish in Halal Vegan Food Business

Injury Leads M’sian Engineer to Flourish in Halal Vegan Food Business
2024-06-26 by Aamer Yaqub

Manimegalai Parry, founder of Dodo Vegan Hut, didn’t start her career in the world of halal vegan food. Beginning as a lecturer at Sunway College and later transitioning to a software quality engineer at Motorola Technology, her corporate path seemed set. However, a chronic arm injury during the pandemic led her to reevaluate her priorities, ultimately prioritizing health over career. This challenging period sparked an idea as she struggled to find healthy, convenient meals in local supermarkets.

The Birth of Dodo Vegan Hut, Halal Vegan Food

Determined to fill this gap, Manimegalai used her engineering skills to experiment with plant-based recipes in her kitchen. Feedback from her family helped refine her creations, and by late 2021, she was ready to commercialize her products. Recognizing the importance of quality and safety, she collaborated with food technology expert Dr. Cheng Lai Hoong. Together, they developed wholesome, plant-based frozen meals free from ultra-processed ingredients, artificial flavors, and unnecessary chemicals.

The Significance of Halal Certification

Manimegalai’s vision extended beyond just creating vegan food. She aimed to make her products accessible to health-conscious and busy Malaysians by obtaining halal certification. This certification, adhering to stringent JAKIM halal standards, opened doors to new markets, including hospitals, hypermarkets, and corporate sectors. Partnering with the Malaysian External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE), Dodo Vegan Hut is now poised to enter international halal markets, particularly where halal certification is a prerequisite.

From Kitchen Counter to Production Facility

Starting in her home kitchen, Manimegalai’s venture quickly grew, leading to the establishment of a state-of-the-art production facility in Simpang Ampat, Penang. Initially offering vegan patties, Dodo Vegan Hut has since expanded its product line to include Asian fusion cutlets, falafels, and even fruit muffins. These products cater to various dietary needs and taste preferences, emphasizing minimal processing and natural preservation methods to maintain nutritional integrity.

Business Expansion and Future Plans

Dodo Vegan Hut operates in both B2B and B2C markets, supplying products to retailers and F&B businesses, while also selling directly to consumers through their online store and platforms like Shopee. With 13 SKUs for retail and 28 SKUs for F&B supplies, the company is building brand awareness through social media campaigns and planning future TV advertisements and strategic supermarket placements.

Looking ahead, Manimegalai is focused on expanding the brand’s reach. Export-ready with the help of a government grant, Dodo Vegan Hut actively participates in trade shows like the Malaysian International Halal Showcase (MIHAS) to connect with international buyers. They are also exploring partnerships with F&B franchises, hotels, and airlines to make healthy, plant-based options more accessible.

A Mission-Driven Company

Beyond business, Dodo Vegan Hut is committed to gender equality and sustainability. The all-women team exemplifies this commitment, aligning their focus on plant-based products with several Sustainable Development Goals, including Zero Hunger, Good Health and Well-being, and Climate Action. Manimegalai’s journey from overcoming personal challenges to creating a brand that promotes healthy eating and innovation is truly inspiring. Dodo Vegan Hut is revolutionizing how Malaysians view frozen food, proving that convenience can go hand-in-hand with health and quality.

By embracing her engineering background and a passion for healthy living, Manimegalai Parry has transformed a personal setback into a thriving business, making Dodo Vegan Hut a leading name in the halal vegan food industry.
