Working professionals can earn a recognized Islamic finance qualification without leaving their jobs. The main options are AAOIFI’s professional certificates, including the Certified Islamic Professional Accountant program at $2,200; the CISI Islamic Finance Qualification, a regulated Level 3 exam; Ethica Institute’s online CIFE at $1,495; and part-time master’s degrees at INCEIF University and others.

AAOIFI certificates
The Accounting and Auditing Organization for Islamic Financial Institutions (AAOIFI) writes the Shariah and accounting standards used by many Islamic banks, so its certificates carry weight with employers. Its CIPA program fee of $2,200 covers registration, four study texts, mock exams, four exam sittings, the practical experience fee and the certificate, with an annual fellowship fee of $100 and discounts of 7.5 to 30 percent depending on the candidate’s country, according to its fee page.
Candidates should note that AAOIFI’s older Certified Shari’a Adviser and Auditor (CSAA) certificate has been discontinued. Its last exam was held in 2018, and it has been replaced by two separate certificates, the CSAD and CSAU, each with four modules and a one-year practical experience requirement, AAOIFI says on its CSAA page.
CISI Islamic Finance Qualification
The IFQ is awarded jointly by the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment (CISI) and the French business school Ecole Supérieure des Affaires. It is regulated by Ofqual, England’s qualifications regulator, at Level 3, and CISI estimates 132 total qualification hours. It suits bankers and advisers who want a recognized introduction without a degree commitment.
Ethica Institute CIFE
Ethica Institute’s Certified Islamic Finance Executive program is delivered online through self-study videos, with 10 months of access and one exam attempt, for $1,495 or $149.50 a month, according to the institute. Advanced tracks cost $1,495 each.
Graduate degrees
INCEIF University in Kuala Lumpur, an AACSB-accredited institution focused on Islamic finance, offers a Master in Islamic Finance Practice full- or part-time over one to four years, with its next intake in January 2027. In Britain, Durham University Business School offers a 12-month MSc in Islamic Finance and runs an annual Islamic Finance Summer School; it signed an agreement with Malaysia’s Securities Commission in July 2025 to develop Islamic capital market education.
How to choose
- Match the credential to the job. Accountants and auditors gain most from AAOIFI’s certificates; front-office bankers from the IFQ or CIFE; those aiming for senior or Shariah-advisory roles from a master’s degree.
- Check employer recognition in the market where you work, for example by checking which credentials local job postings ask for.
- Budget for time, not just fees: a 132-hour qualification is roughly three months of evening study.
- Confirm current fees and exam dates directly with the provider.
