In the face of a burgeoning global appetite for halal goods, Malaysia stands poised to assert its dominance in the industry, and if steered right, could tap into a market potentially worth trillions of ringgit. The nation’s ascendancy in this sector stems from its profound expertise, as pointed out by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Emphasizing the nation’s stature on the world stage, Anwar noted that numerous countries are actively pursuing Malaysia’s guidance in laying the foundations for their own halal sectors. The underlying reason is Malaysia’s gold standard in halal certification, represented by the renowned Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim). This isn’t mere conjecture; Anwar’s assertion is backed by the enthusiasm of foreign dignitaries from countries such as Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, and China, with whom he’s engaged during diplomatic tours.
Anwar envisions a strategic alliance to further propel Malaysia’s global standing in the halal market. “A synergized effort between Jakim and the Halal Development Corporation (HDC) is paramount,” Anwar emphasized. He proposes to streamline their operations under the Ministry of Investment, Trade, and Industry, envisioning this move as a catalyst for vigorous economic expansion.
His statements came on the sidelines of the inaugural event for the Residensi Wilayah, Residensi Prihatin Madani, and Madani Hawkers Centre at Desa Tasik Sungai Besi.
As it stands, HDC is committed to championing brands and products that have garnered the esteemed halal certification from Jakim, ensuring their entry and acceptance in global markets.
But the road ahead is not without its challenges. Anwar candidly addressed the need for refining the halal certification process, emphasizing both its fidelity and efficiency. “While our duty is to maintain impeccable standards and ensure our accountability to Allah SWT, we must also ensure that businesses are not caught in undue delays. A meticulous approach to certification should not translate to protracted approval timelines,” Anwar remarked.
This balanced approach could be the cornerstone of Malaysia’s vision for the global halal industry, setting the stage for unprecedented economic opportunities in the coming years.
