Malaysia Stands Firm on Halal Standards as World Watches

Malaysia Stands Firm on Halal Standards as World Watches
2025-11-25 by Hafiz M. Ahmed

Malaysia, long regarded as a global leader in halal certification, has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining the strictest halal standards, signaling to international markets and Muslim consumers worldwide that the country will not compromise on the integrity of its halal system.

In a statement issued by the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM), officials emphasized that claims suggesting Malaysia is willing to relax its standards are “false and unfounded.” The statement comes amid increasing international scrutiny of halal certification practices, as global trade in halal food and consumer products continues to grow at an unprecedented rate.

“Malaysia has always upheld halal standards as a matter of national principle and religious integrity,” said a senior JAKIM official. “Any suggestion that we would compromise on these standards is simply incorrect.”

Rigorous Process for Recognising Foreign Certification

Malaysia recognises halal certificates issued by foreign bodies, including those from the United States, only after a rigorous and multi-layered audit. These audits are conducted in accordance with the Malaysian Standard and The Malaysian Protocol for Halal Meat & Poultry Production, and require evaluations by at least two Shariah officers. The findings are then reviewed and endorsed by a JAKIM-appointed committee to ensure full compliance.

“All certification bodies recognised by JAKIM are required to fully comply with Malaysia’s halal standards,” the statement said, highlighting requirements for Shariah compliance, food safety, hygiene, and audit procedures. “There are no exceptions.”

The statement clarified that recognition of foreign halal certificates does not signify any relaxation of local standards. Rather, it facilitates smoother administrative processes and strengthens bilateral trade while ensuring imported products undergo the same stringent scrutiny as domestic products. All imported halal goods remain subject to JAKIM assessments, ongoing monitoring, and legal oversight under the Trade Descriptions Act 2011.

A Global Standard for Halal Compliance

Malaysia’s halal certification system is widely regarded as a global benchmark, trusted by both Muslim-majority and non-Muslim countries. The nation’s approach has long combined religious compliance with modern food safety standards, providing a unique model for global trade in halal products.

“Malaysia’s halal certification is more than a label—it is a guarantee of integrity, safety, and Shariah compliance,” the JAKIM official said. “It is recognised internationally, from Southeast Asia to the Middle East, and even in Western markets where halal certification is increasingly demanded by Muslim communities.”

All international agreements signed by Malaysia pertaining to halal trade take effect domestically only after being incorporated into Malaysian law, a safeguard that ensures the protection of Shariah interests, consumer safety, and national standards. This careful approach reflects Malaysia’s dual commitment to religious adherence and regulatory rigor.

Protecting Integrity Amid Growing Global Demand

The global halal market has expanded rapidly in recent years, with estimates suggesting it could exceed $3 trillion by 2030. As Muslim populations rise and consumer demand for halal-certified products grows, Malaysia has positioned itself as a trusted leader capable of setting and enforcing global standards.

Analysts say Malaysia’s strict certification process and legal safeguards distinguish it from many other countries where halal certification has sometimes been inconsistent or loosely enforced. By maintaining these standards, Malaysia not only protects the integrity of its domestic market but also strengthens the confidence of international buyers and investors.

“Malaysia’s approach ensures that consumers, both domestic and international, can trust that a halal label truly means what it says,” said Dr. Aisha Rahman, a global halal industry expert. “It is a model of transparency and reliability in an increasingly crowded halal marketplace.”

A Firm Commitment Moving Forward

JAKIM reiterated that it will continue rigorous monitoring and enforcement to ensure that all halal products, whether produced locally or imported, comply fully with Malaysian Halal Standards. The agency’s ongoing efforts aim to safeguard both religious principles and consumer safety, while solidifying Malaysia’s reputation as a global halal authority.

“Malaysia remains resolute in defending the sovereignty, integrity, and credibility of its halal certification system,” the statement concluded. “We will continue to lead by example, ensuring that our standards remain a global benchmark for halal compliance.”

As the global halal market continues to expand, Malaysia’s stance underscores the country’s dual commitment: adhering to Shariah principles while meeting the highest international standards for food safety and consumer protection. For millions of Muslim consumers around the world, this firm position provides reassurance that Malaysia’s halal label is synonymous with authenticity, safety, and trust.
