Malaysian Shop Raided for Using Fake Halal Logos on Snack Products

Malaysian Perak Shop Raided for Using Fake Halal Logos on Snack Products
2024-07-22 by Aamer Yaqub

In a decisive action against fraudulent practices, the Perak Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry recently raided a shop in Kampung Kacang Putih, Ipoh, revealing a troubling issue: numerous snack products falsely adorned with counterfeit halal logos. Led by Datuk Kamaluddin Ismail, the raid occurred at 12:45 pm yesterday, specifically targeting products misleadingly marketed with invalid halal certifications. This operation highlights the ongoing efforts to uphold the integrity of halal certifications, which are crucial for consumer trust and compliance.

Scope of the Raid and Seizure Details about Halal Logos

During the meticulous search, authorities discovered that these snack items, branded with unauthorized halal logos, were not only sold at the retail level but also distributed wholesale across the northern region of Peninsular Malaysia. This deceptive practice affects a significant consumer base, misleading those relying on authentic certifications for dietary choices. The operation culminated in the seizure of 463 packages of various snack types, with an estimated market value of RM2,720.

Legal Implications and Penalties

This case is now under thorough investigation, under Order 8(a) of the Trade Description Order (Halal Certification and Marking) 2011, which strictly prohibits the false certification of food products as halal. The implicated parties face severe penalties, with fines reaching up to RM500,000 for a first offense and RM100,000 for subsequent crimes, underscoring the seriousness with which the authorities treat such violations.

The Importance of Halal Certification Integrity

The misuse of halal logos and certificates is a grave concern, as it compromises the trust and dietary observance of millions who follow halal guidelines. Halal certification is a crucial aspect of consumer rights in Malaysia and globally, providing necessary assurances about the ethical and compliant nature of food production and handling according to Islamic law.

Public Involvement and Vigilance

Datuk Kamaluddin Ismail emphasized the ministry’s stringent stance against any misuse of halal certifications under the Trade Descriptions Act 2011. He also urged the public to remain vigilant and proactive in reporting any suspicious use of unauthorized halal logos. Consumers can play a pivotal role in safeguarding the integrity of halal certification by reporting questionable products to the nearest ministry branch.

Ensuring Trust and Compliance in Halal Certification

This incident highlights the ongoing challenges and the critical need for stringent oversight in the halal certification process. It serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance and legal compliance to maintain the sanctity and trust in halal certifications that many consumers rely on globally. As authorities continue to enforce these standards, community engagement remains essential in upholding the integrity of halal products in the marketplace.

By implementing stringent actions and fostering public involvement in monitoring and reporting, the ministry is dedicated to curbing fraudulent practices and upholding the integrity of halal certification. This commitment ensures that the halal label continues to serve as a trusted symbol of quality and compliance, assuring consumers everywhere about the authenticity of their purchases.
