The Philippine government is stepping up its efforts to promote halal cuisine from Mindanao, targeting both Muslim and non-Muslim tourists to establish the region as a leading culinary destination in Asia. This strategic move is part of a broader initiative to diversify the country’s tourism offerings and tap into the lucrative halal tourism market.

Expanding Tourism Horizons: Halal Cuisine from Mindanao

Manila is keen on showcasing the diverse and rich halal cuisine of Mindanao, underscoring its potential to attract a global audience. The Department of Tourism (DOT) organized a high-profile event titled “Bismillah: An Evening of Faith, Love, and the Flavors of Mindanao” at the Dusit Thani Hotel in Makati City. This event, attended by ambassadors from Malaysia, Brunei, Pakistan, Egypt, the Netherlands, and Russia, served as a launchpad to introduce Mindanao as an emerging culinary destination in Asia. The initiative, spearheaded by Tourism Secretary Christina Frasco, is a continuation of efforts to fully reopen Mindanao for tourism, a priority under President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s administration​

The event highlighted the intricate and diverse halal cuisine of Mindanao, with dishes prepared by renowned chefs like Datu Shariff Pendatun II and Miguel Cabel Moreno. Among the showcased delicacies were kinilaw (a local take on ceviche), Pisawawan a Sapi (Beef Shoulder with Turmeric and Chili), Piyanggang Manuk (Grilled Free Range Chicken in Burnt Coconut Sauce), and Dinilutan a Seda (Grilled Swordfish with Coconut and Lime Dressing), reflecting the rich culinary traditions of various regions in Mindanao. These dishes not only tantalized the taste buds but also acted as a gateway to understanding the depth and nuances of Mindanawon cuisine​

The international guests, including ambassadors from Malaysia and Pakistan, praised the culinary offerings, highlighting the potential appeal of Mindanao’s flavors to tourists from their countries. The similarities in cuisine and cultural links with Southeast Asian neighbors like Malaysia, Indonesia, and Brunei were emphasized as key factors in promoting halal tourism in the Philippines.
