More UK Muslims Turn to Zakat Amid Living Cost Surge

More UK Muslims
2023-06-23 by Hafiz M. Ahmed

Welcome to More UK Muslims, a vibrant community dedicated to empowering and connecting Muslims across the United Kingdom. As the United Kingdom’s cost-of-living crisis continues to escalate, a growing number of British Muslims are increasingly reliant on charitable support to make ends meet. This worrying trend is evidenced by a significant surge in applications for zakat, a type of financial assistance prescribed by Islamic law. This phenomenon has been particularly noted by the National Zakat Foundation (NZF), a charity offering financial aid to the Muslim population across the UK.

“The frequency of requests for assistance has spiked dramatically,” stated Dr. Sohail Hanif, Chief Executive Officer of the National Zakat Foundation. “A year ago, we were fielding aid requests from Muslims at a rate of one every half hour. The situation, however, has deteriorated considerably since then. We are now processing an application approximately every 12 minutes, representing almost a threefold escalation in demand.”

The swell in aid appeals is not localized to specific regions of the country. Nonetheless, Birmingham, one of the UK’s most populous cities, stands out as a significant source of requests, ranking second on NZF’s list of cities where residents are most likely to seek assistance.

Furthermore, the uptick in demand is not solely attributable to demographics traditionally seen as economically vulnerable, such as asylum seekers. In an unsettling development, Dr. Hanif highlighted that “now, 70% of applicants are British citizens – people who were born and raised here in the UK.” This trend indicates that financial distress is broad-based, affecting long-standing communities.

This increase in zakat applications coincides with a sharp rise in the UK’s inflation rate, which is currently at its highest in four decades. Recent figures reveal that the yearly inflation rate escalated to 7.9% in the twelve months up to May 2023, a slight increase from the previous 7.8% in April 2023.

The NZF attributes the cost-of-living crisis directly to its disconcerting finding that half of the UK’s Muslim population is currently living below the poverty line. This stark reality underscores the extent of deprivation within the UK’s Muslim community.

“We are witnessing a significant number of families struggling financially, and there’s a growing trend of people falling behind on their energy bills,” said Dr. Hanif. “Numerous families are pleading for assistance with everyday living costs. Others have resorted to borrowing money from relatives and friends, and are now burdened with the stress of repaying these debts.”

In Islamic tradition, zakat, or almsgiving, is a mandatory act of benevolence that establishes a system in which the affluent are obligated to aid the less fortunate. This concept is underscored in the Holy Quran, Chapter 2, Surah Baqarah verse 274: “Those who spend of their goods (in charity) by night and by day in secret and public shall have their reward with their Lord: on them shall be no fear nor shall they grieve.” The evolving situation underscores the imperative and pressing nature of zakat, facilitating UK Muslims to prosper and contribute to a dynamic, inclusive society.
