NC Halal Recalls Lamb Carcasses

NC Halal Recalls Lamb Carcasses
2025-07-08 by Laiba Adnan

RALEIGH, N.C. — NC Halal, a meat processing facility based in Mount Olive, has announced a voluntary recall of all whole lamb carcasses processed on June 25, 2025, after state agricultural inspectors identified incomplete processing records. The recall was initiated after officials from the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (NCDA&CS) Meat and Poultry Inspection Division found that required temperature documentation was missing from the company’s food safety records.

Why the Recall Was Issued

According to Dr. Karen Beck, Director of the NCDA&CS Meat and Poultry Inspection Division, the recall was prompted by a failure to properly document product temperatures during processing—a critical step in ensuring food safety. “Proper temperature monitoring is essential to prevent bacterial growth and ensure meat is safe for consumption,” Dr. Beck explained. “While there is no direct evidence of contamination, the lack of required records means we cannot fully verify that all safety protocols were followed.”

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) classifies this as a Class II recall, meaning the risk of adverse health effects is low but cannot be entirely ruled out. As a precaution, consumers who purchased these lamb carcasses are advised not to consume them and to either discard the meat or return it to the point of purchase for a refund.

Affected Products and Distribution

The recall applies to:

  • NC Halal, LLC whole lamb carcasses

  • Inspection mark: NCDA establishment number P-378

The products were distributed to:

  • Individual buyers

  • Local halal butcher shops

  • Small retailers in the Raleigh-Durham area

The lamb carcasses were shipped from NC Halal’s processing facility at 6301 U.S. Highway 13 South, Mount Olive, NC. The company has confirmed that no other products or processing dates are affected by this recall.

What Consumers Should Do

Customers who purchased these lamb carcasses should:

  1. Check the inspection label to confirm if their product is part of the recall.

  2. Dispose of the meat or return it to the place of purchase.

  3. Contact NC Halal with any questions at (919) 638-5921 (Monday–Friday, 7 a.m.–3:30 p.m.).

No Reported Illnesses, But Caution Advised

As of now, there have been no confirmed reports of illness linked to the recalled lamb. However, health officials warn that improperly processed meat can pose risks, including potential bacterial contamination such as E. coli or Salmonella. Consumers who experience symptoms like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or fever after consuming the product should seek medical attention immediately.

Broader Implications for Food Safety

This recall highlights the importance of strict adherence to food safety protocols, particularly in halal meat processing, where traceability and hygiene are paramount. The halal food industry has seen significant growth in recent years, with increasing demand for certified products in the U.S. and globally. Incidents like this underscore the need for enhanced regulatory oversight to maintain consumer trust.

NC Halal has stated that it is cooperating fully with inspectors and has already implemented corrective measures to prevent similar issues in the future. The company emphasized its commitment to halal standards and food safety, noting that this recall was initiated voluntarily as a precautionary measure.

How the Halal Meat Industry is Regulated

In the U.S., halal meat processing is subject to both USDA and religious certification requirements. Facilities must comply with federal food safety regulations while also meeting Islamic dietary laws. This dual oversight ensures that products are both safe and religiously compliant, but gaps in documentation—as seen in this case—can still occur.

What’s Next for NC Halal?

The company will need to reinforce its record-keeping procedures and undergo additional inspections before resuming normal operations. Industry experts suggest that automated temperature monitoring systems could help prevent similar issues in the future.

For now, consumers are urged to stay informed and follow recall guidelines to ensure their safety.
