Tripoli Gears Up for Libya’s 12th International Quran Contest

Tripoli Gears Up for Libya's 12th International Quran Contest
2024-07-09 by Aamer Yaqub

Tripoli is eagerly preparing to host Libya’s 12th International Quran Contest, a distinguished event that attracts participants from 62 countries. This prestigious competition highlights exceptional talents in Quran memorization, intonation, and recitation. Organized by Libya’s Awqaf and Islamic Affairs Ministry, this year’s event promises to be a spectacular celebration of Quranic arts and knowledge. With a diverse range of participants showcasing their skills, the contest underscores the global reverence for the Quran and the rich traditions of Islamic scholarship.

A Diverse Range of Talents in Quran Contest

The event will highlight the diverse skills of contestants from across the globe, each bringing their unique approach to Quranic recitation and memorization. These participants represent the best from their respective countries, having excelled in local and national competitions to earn their spot on this international stage. Including representatives from countries as varied as Egypt, Kyrgyzstan, Morocco, Thailand, and many others, underscores the universal appeal and reverence for the Quran.

Expert Judging Panel

Libya’s Awqaf Ministry has meticulously assembled a panel of judges comprising prominent scholars and experts in Quranic sciences. Although specific names have not been disclosed, the panel’s expertise is expected to ensure a fair and high-standard evaluation of the contestants’ performances.

Beyond the Main Competition

In addition to the main competition, the event will feature a variety of programs aimed at enriching the participants’ and attendees’ experience. These programs include workshops, lectures, and cultural exchanges designed to deepen the understanding and appreciation of Quranic traditions. The goal is not only to celebrate the reciters’ skills but also to promote the correct use of classical Arabic and encourage young people to engage deeply with the Quran.

Historical and Cultural Significance

Libya, a predominantly Muslim country in North Africa, boasts a rich tradition of Quranic memorization, with over a million memorizers. The competition’s return to Tripoli marks a significant moment for a nation that has endured years of turmoil since the 2011 NATO-backed civil war that ousted and killed long-time leader Muammar Gaddafi. Despite recent political divisions, the country remains united in its reverence for the Quran and its teachings.

Rewards and Recognition

The competition offers substantial prizes, with the top three winners receiving 100,000, 80,000, and 40,000 Libyan Dinars respectively. These rewards are not only a recognition of the participants’ dedication and skill but also an encouragement for future generations to continue the tradition of Quranic memorization and recitation.

Libya’s 12th International Quran Contest transcends the boundaries of a typical competition, emerging as a vibrant celebration of faith, knowledge, and cultural heritage. By bringing together participants from 62 countries, this esteemed event fosters a sense of unity and shared purpose among Muslims worldwide. It underscores the profound significance of the Quran in daily life and inspires young people to engage deeply and meaningfully with their religious texts. This contest not only highlights the exceptional talents in Quranic arts but also promotes a global appreciation for Islamic traditions and scholarship, reinforcing the timeless values of unity and devotion within the Muslim community.
