Vietnam’s Halal Tourism: A Rising Star in the Global Travel Landscape

Vietnam's Halal Tourism: A Rising Star in the Global Travel Landscape
2023-11-13 by Hafiz M. Ahmed

Vietnam’s tourism sector, renowned for its rich cultural heritage and breathtaking landscapes, is now setting its sights on a new horizon: Halal tourism. This burgeoning sector, catering to Muslim travelers, is rapidly gaining traction as a potential goldmine for Vietnam’s tourism industry. Let’s delve into how Vietnam is embracing Halal tourism and why it’s becoming a key player in this global market.

The Growing Promise of Halal Tourism in Vietnam

Halal tourism, as defined by the Global Muslim Travel Index (GMTI), is more than just a niche market. With over 2.1 billion Muslims worldwide, making up about 25% of the global population, the demand for Muslim-friendly travel experiences is surging. The number of Muslim international tourists soared from 108 million in 2013 to an estimated 160 million in 2019, with projections suggesting an 80% increase by 2023. This market’s spending power is formidable, expected to hit a staggering US$341.1 billion annually by 2030.

Vietnam’s Strategy to Attract Muslim Tourists

Vietnam has witnessed a significant uptick in tourists from Muslim-majority countries such as the Middle East, Southeast Asian countries like Singapore and Indonesia have also contributed to the rising Muslim tourist arrivals in the country. This influx is no coincidence but the result of Vietnam’s strategic efforts to tap into the Halal market.

Targeted Marketing Efforts

Recognizing the potential, the Vietnam National Authority of Tourism (VNAT) has organized several promotional conferences in key regions like the Middle East and Southeast Asia. These events focus on showcasing Vietnam’s readiness to cater to Muslim travelers. Moreover, VNAT is intensifying its promotion in India, identified as a critical market for future growth.

Tailoring Services for Muslim Travelers

Vietnam’s approach goes beyond mere marketing. Localities like Quang Ninh, Da Nang, Quang Nam, and Kien Giang are actively adapting their offerings to be more Muslim-friendly. This includes the establishment of prayer facilities in public areas, hotels, and entertainment spots, and ensuring the availability of Halal-certified food and beverages.

A Focus on High-End Experiences

While continuing to explore traditional markets like Malaysia, Indonesia, and Singapore, Vietnam is also eyeing the affluent Middle Eastern market. Tourists from this region are known for their willingness to indulge in high-end services, presenting a lucrative opportunity for Vietnam’s luxury tourism segment.

The Path Ahead for Vietnam’s Halal Tourism

Vietnam’s foray into Halal tourism is not just about expanding its market reach; it’s about embracing cultural diversity and inclusivity. By catering to the unique needs of Muslim travelers, Vietnam is setting a benchmark in the global tourism industry.

As Halal tourism continues to grow, Vietnam is poised to become a preferred destination for Muslim travelers, offering a harmonious blend of cultural authenticity, scenic beauty, and Muslim-friendly amenities. With its strategic initiatives and inclusive approach, Vietnam’s tourism sector is well on its way to unlocking the vast potential of the Halal tourism market.
