Zetrix AI Berhad has signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) with Malaysia’s Department of Islamic Development (JAKIM) and the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) to co-develop a Shariah-compliant AI platform, NurAI. This pioneering system is designed to assist in issuing fatwas, halal certifications, and providing verified Shariah guidance to meet the growing demand for trusted Islamic digital solutions.
Key Features of the Collaboration
The partnership focuses on three core areas: Shariah certification and governance, global advocacy to position Malaysia as an Islamic AI hub, and the establishment of an official JAKIM channel on NurAI for fatwas, halal certification, and Shariah advice.
NurAI will support multiple languages, including Malay, English, Indonesian, and Arabic, ensuring accessibility across Muslim-majority countries and beyond.
The system will comply with Malaysia’s cybersecurity and data sovereignty policies, safeguarding sensitive information while maintaining transparency.
One of its key objectives is to curb misinformation and ensure that religious rulings and halal standards remain accurate, consistent, and widely accessible.
Why It’s Important
Malaysia is already recognized as a global leader in the halal industry, with its certification widely accepted in over 40 countries. The halal economy is projected to surpass USD 3 trillion globally by 2030, driven by growing Muslim populations and rising demand for halal products in food, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, travel, and finance.
By integrating AI into halal certification and fatwa issuance, Malaysia strengthens its role as a standard-setter in the global halal ecosystem. The move not only enhances efficiency but also positions the country as a pioneer in merging technology with Islamic governance.
Potential Benefits
Faster Halal Certification: AI can streamline the often lengthy halal certification process by automating initial checks, ensuring faster approvals while keeping scholar oversight intact.
Stronger Global Recognition: A Shariah-compliant AI backed by JAKIM could boost international confidence, making Malaysian certification even more attractive to exporters.
Knowledge Accessibility: NurAI could serve as an educational tool, helping businesses, students, and consumers better understand Shariah rulings.
Support for SMEs: Small and medium enterprises, often burdened by complex certification requirements, may benefit from a simplified, AI-assisted process.
Challenges and Considerations
Interpretation Differences: Islamic rulings can vary across regions. The AI must be adaptable and transparent to account for these differences.
Oversight and Trust: Human scholars will remain essential to verify rulings and ensure AI outputs align with Islamic jurisprudence.
Ethical Governance: Clear rules and ongoing supervision are required to prevent misuse or misinterpretation of Shariah rulings.
Malaysia’s Long-Term Vision
This initiative is in line with Malaysia’s ambition to become a global leader in Islamic fintech, halal trade, and digital governance. With NurAI, the country not only enhances its domestic certification process but also exports its expertise to the wider Muslim world.
If successful, the project could inspire similar AI-driven platforms in finance, Islamic education, and even governance, cementing Malaysia’s role in shaping the future of the halal digital economy.
