Macao has achieved a significant milestone in its tourism development by being recognized as a Muslim-friendly destination at the ASTINDO Travel Fair 2025 held in Jakarta, Indonesia, from August 28 to 31. This recognition highlights the city’s ongoing efforts to diversify its tourism offerings, appeal to a wider demographic of international travelers, and strengthen its ties with key Southeast Asian markets.
Recognition in the Global Muslim Travel Index 2025
The recognition came alongside Macao’s debut on the Global Muslim Travel Index (GMTI) 2025, where the city ranked 16th overall and secured 5th position in the Muslim women-friendly category among non-OIC destinations. These rankings are not only a sign of progress but also serve as proof that Macao is gradually building its reputation as an inclusive and welcoming destination for Muslim visitors, particularly women and families who seek cultural respect, safety, and Halal facilities while traveling.
Macao’s Showcase at ASTINDO Travel Fair 2025
At the ASTINDO Travel Fair, Macao’s Government Tourism Office (MGTO) presented a 36-square-meter pavilion in collaboration with travel partners. The pavilion highlighted Macao’s unique blend of heritage, entertainment, gastronomy, and cultural diversity. It featured interactive displays, cultural showcases, games, and artistic installations, as well as the popular mascot MAK MAK. Promotional campaigns across media platforms, travel magazines, and digital channels complemented the exhibition, ensuring that Macao’s evolving identity as a culturally inclusive and Muslim-friendly destination reached a broad audience.
Importance of the GMTI Recognition
The GMTI recognition holds particular importance as it reflects the readiness of Macao’s tourism infrastructure to meet the growing global demand for Muslim-friendly travel experiences. The Muslim travel market has been expanding rapidly over the past decade, with young Muslim professionals, women travelers, and families forming a significant part of this growth. Being placed 16th overall and 5th in the Muslim women-friendly category demonstrates that Macao is not only embracing this demographic but is also developing a safe, respectful, and accessible environment for them.
Strategic Initiatives to Promote Halal Tourism
Macao’s path to this recognition has been marked by a series of strategic initiatives throughout 2025. Earlier this year, the MGTO introduced the “Macao for Muslim Travelers – Halal Travel Guide,” a detailed resource designed to help Muslim tourists easily identify Halal-certified dining options, mosques and prayer spaces, as well as other relevant services.
The Halal Horizons Pavilion, introduced during the 13th Macao International Travel Expo (MITE), also played an important role in highlighting Macao’s readiness for Halal tourism. This pavilion brought together Halal-certified businesses, including restaurants and hotels, and even featured a simulated prayer room, allowing visitors and potential partners to experience firsthand how Macao is integrating Muslim-friendly facilities into its tourism ecosystem.
Focus on Indonesia and Southeast Asia
Indonesia has been a particular focus for Macao’s tourism promotion. With its large Muslim population and rising outbound tourism trends, Indonesia presents a key growth market. During ASTINDO, MGTO arranged destination presentations, business-to-business meetings, and familiarization trips for travel agencies and media outlets. These activities were designed to deepen partnerships, promote Macao as a diverse leisure and cultural hub, and enhance air connectivity between the two destinations.
Opportunities for Local Businesses and Policy Makers
For local tourism operators and businesses, this recognition presents both opportunities and responsibilities. Hotels and restaurants now have a stronger incentive to pursue Halal certification, introduce prayer facilities, and train staff in cultural awareness. These efforts not only attract more Muslim visitors but also improve the overall quality of service for international tourists from diverse backgrounds.
For policy makers, the recognition reinforces the need to continue investing in inclusive tourism infrastructure. Expanding facilities such as prayer rooms in airports, shopping centers, and tourist sites, improving multilingual signage, and enhancing accessibility for elderly and family travelers are all steps that will solidify Macao’s reputation as a world-class, inclusive travel destination.
Looking Ahead
Looking ahead, Macao’s tourism authorities are planning additional promotional activities to maintain momentum. A roadshow in Indonesia scheduled for October 2025 will serve as a major opportunity to reinforce Macao’s new positioning and strengthen ties with Southeast Asian partners. As part of its long-term vision, MGTO intends to further integrate Muslim-friendly services into its tourism landscape, encourage cross-sector cooperation, and monitor the impact of these initiatives through visitor feedback and performance indicators.
The recognition of Macao as a Muslim-friendly destination at ASTINDO Travel Fair 2025 is more than an accolade; it is a sign of a new chapter in the city’s tourism development. With its inclusion in the GMTI rankings, the introduction of targeted initiatives such as Halal travel guides, and the ongoing push to engage Muslim-majority markets, Macao is positioning itself as a forward-thinking, inclusive, and globally competitive destination.
By prioritizing inclusivity, cultural awareness, and service quality, Macao is not only diversifying its tourism appeal but also setting an example for other destinations aiming to tap into the fast-growing Muslim travel market. The recognition at ASTINDO 2025 marks the beginning of a long-term transformation that will likely enhance Macao’s global reputation and deliver sustainable growth for its tourism industry.
