Spain Allocates Funds for Halal Meals for Moroccan Military Trainees

The Spanish government has announced a substantial allocation of €113,000 (approximately $129,000) to cover the cost of halal meals for Moroccan military personnel currently undergoing specialized training in Spain. This commitment underscores Spain’s dedication to supporting its international partners and ensuring cultural and religious dietary needs are met during collaborative defense programs.

The funding is specifically earmarked for catering during the training sessions, which are being held at the San Fernando shipyard, a key facility of the state-owned Navantia shipbuilding company. This initiative is part of an existing agreement with Morocco, designed to facilitate a smooth and respectful learning environment for the visiting soldiers.

Under the terms of the catering contract, meals must be not only nutritious and varied but also strictly comply with Islamic dietary laws. This means that pork and alcohol products are completely excluded, and only halal-certified meats can be served. This meticulous attention to detail ensures that the Moroccan trainees can focus entirely on their professional development without concerns about their dietary requirements.

Training a New Generation: Modernizing Morocco’s Naval Fleet

Navantia is set to play a crucial role in the modernization of the Royal Moroccan Navy. The Spanish company will train up to 86 Moroccan soldiers over an extended period, from February 2025 to June 2026. This intensive program is designed to equip them with the necessary skills and expertise to effectively operate a new naval vessel that Navantia is building for Morocco.

This vessel’s upcoming delivery, scheduled for mid-2026, marks a significant milestone in the long-standing relationship between Spain and Morocco. It will be the first warship built by a Spanish shipyard for Morocco in nearly four decades, symbolizing a renewed era of defense industrial cooperation and strategic partnership. This collaboration highlights mutual trust and a shared vision for regional stability and security.

The new warship itself is a state-of-the-art addition to Morocco’s maritime capabilities. It boasts a versatile flight deck capable of supporting a 10-ton helicopter or drones, significantly enhancing its reconnaissance and operational reach. Furthermore, it includes a dedicated hangar for air operations, allowing for the protection and maintenance of airborne assets. For auxiliary missions and rapid deployment, the vessel is also equipped with two 8-meter rigid-hulled inflatable boats (RHIBs), adding to its tactical flexibility.
